Grant Park Friends
The mission of the Friends of Grant Park is to preserve natural areas of the park, enhance unique features of the park, encourage use of the park, and provide a mechanism for private contributions to supplement public funding for Grant Park
Facilities in the park would meet the needs of people using the parks. (Example: We have picnic pavilions which do not allow wheelchair access to the rest rooms. The bicycle trail needs maintenance.)
Rental facilities (such as the Wulff Lodge) would be reworked to be more attractive (and meet accessibility codes).
Invasive plants would be aggressively controlled, as part of a focused plan to restore all woodland areas in the park to optimum community of native plants. As part of this, it would be great to have “plant ID” outings at several times each year, so local residents could more fully appreciate the natural areas of the park.
Regular park clean-up events would have good participation
Annual Irish party fundraiser (the Pullin’ O’ the Green).
biennial (every “even numbered year”) fall “Celtic Halloween” party. Its part “fundraiser,” part “relax and party.”
Biennial (even-numbered years) Community Forum event, bringing together local residents and public officials.
We want to sponsor regular informal get-togethers for people who care about the park. Our December “meeting” was a pizza party, during which we recognized the extra work that a Parks staff worker has been doing. Other ideas include possibly organizing a “XC Ski” group, a fall picnic, and similar events where people can get to know each other better.
